IELTS STRUCTURE

The IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is structured into four main sections, assessing different language skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Each section tests a specific aspect of your English proficiency. Here’s a detailed breakdown of the IELTS structure:

Overview:

  • The Listening section has 4 parts with 40 questions in total. It tests your ability to understand spoken English in various contexts.
  • You will listen to recorded conversations, monologues, and dialogues and answer questions based on what you hear.

 

Format:

  • Part 1: A conversation between two people in an everyday social context (e.g., making a booking).
  • Part 2: A monologue set in an everyday context (e.g., a speech about local facilities).
  • Part 3: A conversation between up to four people in an educational or training context (e.g., a discussion among students and a tutor).
  • Part 4: A monologue on an academic subject (e.g., a university lecture).

Overview:

  • The Reading section consists of 3 sections with 40 questions. It tests your ability to understand different types of written texts.

 

Format:

  • For IELTS Academic: The reading texts are taken from books, journals, magazines, and newspapers. They are more suited for those applying for higher education or professional registration.
  • For IELTS General Training: The reading materials come from books, magazines, advertisements, company handbooks, and guidelines. These texts focus on basic social or workplace contexts.

  • The Writing section includes 2 tasks, where you are required to respond to specific prompts. It tests your ability to express ideas clearly and coherently in written English.

 

Format:

  • For IELTS Academic:
    • Task 1: You will be asked to describe, summarize, or explain information presented in a graph, table, chart, or diagram in at least 150 words.
    • Task 2: You will write an essay in response to a point of view, argument, or problem. The essay should be at least 250 words.
  • For IELTS General Training:
    • Task 1: You will be asked to write a letter (formal, semi-formal, or informal) in response to a given situation.
    • Task 2: You will write an essay in response to a point of view, argument, or problem.

Overview:

  • The Speaking section involves a face-to-face interview with a certified IELTS examiner. It is designed to assess your spoken English skills.

 

Format:

  • Part 1 (Introduction and Interview, 4–5 minutes): The examiner will ask you general questions about yourself, your home, family, work, studies, and hobbies.
  • Part 2 (Long Turn, 3–4 minutes): You will be given a task card with a specific topic. You have 1 minute to prepare and then speak for 1–2 minutes on the topic.
  • Part 3 (Discussion, 4–5 minutes): The examiner will ask follow-up questions related to the topic in Part 2. This part focuses on abstract ideas and complex discussion.
