PTE STRUCTURE

The PTE Academic test is divided into three main parts: Speaking & Writing, Reading, and Listening. The entire test lasts around 2 hours, and it assesses a candidate's English proficiency through a variety of tasks.

This section assesses your ability to speak and write in academic English.

  • Personal Introduction: (Not scored) You introduce yourself in a brief recording.
  • Read Aloud: Read a text aloud.
  • Repeat Sentence: Repeat a sentence after listening to a recording.
  • Describe Image: Speak about an image shown on the screen.
  • Re-tell Lecture: Summarize a lecture in your own words after listening.
  • Answer Short Questions: Respond to simple questions based on general knowledge.
  • Summarize Written Text: Write a one-sentence summary of a passage.
  • Essay Writing: Write an essay (200-300 words) on a given topic.

This section evaluates your reading comprehension and involves several different question formats.

  • Multiple Choice (Single and Multiple Answers): Choose the correct answers based on a passage.
  • Re-order Paragraphs: Rearrange disordered sentences to form a coherent paragraph.
  • Fill in the Blanks: Complete the text by filling in missing words in gaps.

This section assesses your ability to understand spoken English in various contexts.

  • Summarize Spoken Text: Write a summary of a short recording.
  • Multiple Choice (Single and Multiple Answers): Answer questions after listening to a recording.
  • Fill in the Blanks: Complete sentences while listening to a recording.
  • Highlight Correct Summary: Identify the correct summary of a spoken passage.
  • Select Missing Word: Choose the missing word in an audio recording.
  • Highlight Incorrect Words: Identify incorrect words in a transcript based on an audio.
  • Write from Dictation: Type a sentence you hear.

PTE is scored on a scale of 10 to 90, with 90 being the highest level of proficiency. The score reflects your overall English ability, including communicative skills (Speaking, Writing, Reading, Listening) and enabling skills (grammar, oral fluency, pronunciation, spelling, vocabulary).
